Posing Tips to Make Your Business Branding Photos Look Natural ~ Vancouver, WA
/There are many different “styles” of photography out there. I definitely fall into the “documentary/lifestyle” variety — photographing what’s going on/candid moments rather than lots of posed images. But for business branding photos there will be some posed moments, and these are my TOP tips that I give all of my clients during their sessions!
Keep Your Hands Busy/Engage With Your Environment
One of the most common questions that I get during photo sessions of ALL types is “what do I do with my hands?”
Hands that are hanging limply at your sides looks (and feels) SUPER awkward, so a key tip when you’re being photographed in ANY capacity is to give your hands a job! Whether that’s touching/adjusting your own person/outfit (i.e.. in your hair, holding your skirt/jacket/tie/etc.) or interacting with your environment (i.e. turning pages in a notebook, holding a prop, etc.)…. just have them DO something.
Shift Your Weight
Unless you are going for a strong, “Superman” power pose, I generally recommend that my clients shift their weight to one side. This looks (and feels!) more relaxed and inviting.
Add Movement
One common misconception is that you have to stand perfectly still during your photo session. We are no longer photographing in the 1800s! Camera technology has improved greatly. =D As a photographer, I LOVE it when my clients move their bodies naturally during sessions. It shows off a bit of personality and often helps my clients to relax and have a little fun.
“Movement” can be things like walking toward the camera, flipping your hair around, swinging your skirt around, talk and make hand gestures… just to name a few!
Think About Someone You Enjoy Talking To!
This one sounds weird, but hear me out! I know that old “trick” about stage fright and picturing the audience in their underwear? Well, it’s kind of like that! If you are picturing a friend, family member, or favorite client that you’re having a chat with, it can help to relax your face/expressions and result in a more natural smile.
When you have a session with me I guide you through all of this and more…. you do NOT need to remember all of these things. I’ve got you! =)
