Posing 101 ~ Boudoir Photography ~ Vancouver, WA

For today’s boudoir post, you’re in for a special treat… We’ll be switching things up and giving you an inside look at all things posing!

If you’ve ever taken a look through my boudoir blog or social media posts, I’m sure you’ve noticed that we include all different types of poses in each photography session! From simple poses all the way to sensual, full body poses (that can often seem more “glamorous” to shoot than they actually are)… I’m here to walk you through it all!

To do this, I’ll be taking you behind the camera with me!

One of my past clients (who also used to be one of my brand ambassadors) recently came into the studio for a model shoot, which was SO helpful. I wanted to show what it’s REALLY like to pose during boudoir sessions, and this photography shoot helped me do just that. Plus, I wanted to try out some new posing techniques, and I knew that a model session would really allow us to experiment and see which new poses work out the best… and which ones don’t! lol

Here’s how our session went!

On the day of the shoot, we started with a “warm up” set and then went live in my Facebook boudoir group. If you haven’t already joined the group, we would love to have you! It’s always fun to go live in our group because some of our members haven’t had a boudoir experience quite yet… And for those who haven’t stepped in the studio, the idea of figuring out how to pose and position yourself in front of the camera may seem intimidating.

That’s exactly why we went live… We wanted to show that posing during a session isn’t as difficult as it may seem!

During the live session, I made sure to try out a variety of poses (similar to those that you’d see if you look through my boudoir blog posts), and I talked my model through all of them as we captured the shots. In the living room, we showcased what it’s like to pose while using the mirror as a prop. Our clients also commonly use the furniture while posing, so we demonstrated the types of positions that you may jump into while posing on the couch or other furniture. Many of these poses involve reclining back with your eyes closed… I often tell my clients that boudoir is the best because you get to lay down, close your eyes, and breathe for an hour. lol

While we were using the bedroom set, we also showed what it’s like to pose while wrapped up in sheets. Clients may sometimes choose to take an “implied nude” shot that involves being wrapped up in the sheets of their choice. If clients haven’t tried out this type of pose during their session, they may not know what’s entirely involved in bringing this photo to life… so I used our live session to highlight this pose!

After going live, I also made sure that I had plenty of video content from the model session to share on social media! Here’s one of the behind the scenes videos that I captured… This video shows a different perspective of the “in the sheets” photos that have become a client favorite! There’s a bit more involved when it comes to setting up this shot, but once you’re all set in position, the poses that I’ll walk you through are very simple.

Finally, before the session ended, I wanted to try out a few new posing techniques! As a boudoir photographer, I’m constantly learning all about the different types of poses that look amazing on camera and are also accessible for all types of bodies. I typically don’t try out a ton of new poses during a client session, so a model session is perfect for doing this!

Thank you SO much to my model for spending the day with me and helping out! This session was so important because it gave a behind the scenes look at what’s actually involved when it comes to positioning yourself in a boudoir shoot. Just remember… The poses aren’t as difficult as they may seem, and I’ll always be there to walk you through them!
