Studio Set Series: The Windows ~ Boudoir Photography ~ Vancouver, WA

Today's blog post is the latest addition to my Studio Set Series, and believe it or not... I bet you'd be surprised to hear that this boudoir blog post exists entirely because of my contractor. Yep, my contractor! Let me explain...

When I was renting my studio in Vancouver and sharing the space with another photographer, there was only so much customizing I could do... I could easily customize my boudoir sets, props, and backdrops based on my client's vision. However, renting a space doesn't allow you to knock down walls, replace doors, or add in larger windows! Doing these types of renovations weren't necessarily a MUST, but I knew that if I ever set up a residential studio... I would love to customize the space in a way that maximized our lighting sources and opportunities for silhouette shots!

Fast forward to 2023, and it was finally time for me to have my residential studio remodeled before photographing clients in that space! It had a ton of potential but needed a good amount of love. Thankfully, I worked with an amazing contractor who definitely listened when I asked him to install the BIGGEST window he possibly could with the space I had available. I also requested a new door for the entryway because I specifically wanted one with windows.

Why? I couldn't wait to use the windows artistically and capture some dreamy images there!

Now that I've had around two years to photograph clients in this new studio space, I'm excited to share all of the photos that I've taken in today's featured studio set... the windows!

The first window that I'm going to highlight will probably look familiar to you if you've read this blog post about my living room set! Right above the shelving and window seat in the living room, you can find the VERY large window that my contractor helped me install! It's perfect for capturing the silhouettes of my clients. When a ton of light pours through the window, my models become backlit, so you can only see their darkened silhouettes in my shots of them. The resulting photos are dramatic, sensual, and have an artistic feel! Many of these photos are taken in black and white to emphasize the shadows in the image.

I also LOVE taking photos by the windows on the entryway door. I chose a translucent, light colored fabric to be draped over the door, and when clients pose near this light source... the results are magic! When models are posing in this area, I typically direct them to place one arm above their head and tilt their head toward the light. These images come out looking SO romantic, airy, and dreamy. With these shots, they're sometimes left in color if the photo is less about the shadows and MORE about what the light is hitting!

So... what do you think? Whether you're new to the world of boudoir OR a photography veteran, would you like to try posing by these windows? If you're a fan of boudoir photos that look dramatic yet dreamy, then this set is just right for you.
